Fan

Great point. Building community is more than networking and panels.

Those little chat like between you and manpacks cofounder Ken was awesome. Not surprisingly, two e commerce Mens clothing startups have a few things to talk about.

The best thing about this is how lightweight they are; a couple emails or tweets and it's set.

Peer groups are essential to success. You should always be mindful of who you spend time with as generally you'll be as successful as the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Thanks

Completely agree, and I was actually able to find Blank Label's Chief Web Architect by blogging. I couldn't find anyone in Boston to work with me, then I started blogging about the idea, the problem, the challenges I was having, and people started writing in. It was pretty amazing actually. If you're going to be in Shanghai, you should connect with our Lead Evangelist Danny Wong whose based out there - dwong [at] blanklabel.com

Really great tips Fan. Really enjoyed your talk today at RamenCamp.

As a non-technical founder, these are the same tips that I would offer for others looking to launch their own venture, as well as an important additional ones. One thing that I would recommend for all founders, technical or not, is to not only pitch your idea, but also to document it and blog about your own experiences. This will help gain additional exposure, and also serve as an invaluable resource for other start-ups. As you mentioned in one of your previous posts, it serves as a fun reference point to look back on what your previous conceptions were, and what the reality of the situation really is.

Drop me a line sometime, I'm very interested in hearing your experiences with Blank-Label. Heard about the company last year, and have been rooting for you guys ever since. I'll be moving to Shanghai in 2 weeks as well, so I'd love to swap stories as well!

Hi Fan,
My first comment was entered prematurely. I am a subscriber to "Entrepreneur" magazine and just received the April 2011 subscription. When I came across the feature story on Blank Label, the hair on my neck stood up! I had a similar idea but for an app for women's dress/clothing. I hope you don't think I'm trying to ride your coat tail, since you and your partners have worked diligently to build Blank Label, but I too have a desire to start a business. But I just did not know where to begin. I have left the corporate world, and since then have submitted my app idea to Medl app company in hope that they will be interested in creating the app and just make money off that. I don't have the experience for the two posted positions, but still would love to get involve with Blank Label, what would this take? I have other experience and ideas if there's interest.
